An Open Letter To Hiring Managers and Recruiters

Dear Sir/Ma’am/Other:

Job hunting is never a fun or easy task, but right now is especially hard on the millions of people hoping to get a position at your company.

I understand you have a difficult job of sifting through hundreds, if not thousands, of applications. Imagine being on the flipside of that.

Applying to countless jobs, submitting writing samples, developing new samples, creating customized resumes and cover letters, all to be sent a generic email telling you that you are not good enough… sometimes.

And, in some cases:

You hear the term ghosting for dating, but what about ghosting from a job interview? It happens. It has happened to me. Attending multiple job interviews and sending a personalized thank you note only to never hearing from hiring managers again.

And what about proving myself through samples? I do not mind doing the work, but to never hear from hiring managers again after spending time developing customized projects…

More recently, I have come across many recruiters being misleading about the positions they are hiring for.

I guess I am just at a loss of what to do. I have always been a believer in “hard work pays off,” but I am beginning to see that is not the case for me. The more I speak with others currently forced into job searching, I realize these instances are more common than I had thought.

Take this as what it is from a dedicated, hard-working, active job hunter. Show kindness to those sending in applications — we are struggling. Remember, you have a job while the many people you ghost or tell are “not good enough” without explanation are praying something sticks.

Please reconsider how you word your rejection emails. And, if given the opportunity, offer advice to candidates that just missed the mark to help improve their chances of working within your company or landing a position somewhere else.

We are all just trying to do our best here.

Sincerely,

A tired applicant
