What do Flight Attendants Really Think About Us?

Just shut up and remain in your seat.

Many people mistakenly think that flight attendants are there to help us during the flight. We think that they should smile for us and bring us a cup of water if we want to. This is only a small part of the truth.

Flight attendants are the main people on board to ensure security. While the pilots have to keep the plane in control, flight attendants are there to keep us in control. There are THOUSANDS of similar stories: an airplane had to return to the airport or choose another destination because of the behavior of people on board. These cases cause great inconvenience for other passengers and airlines. And if the plane had to be landed because of the bad behavior of the passenger, good luck in court.

When we enter the airplane, we are being greeted by a couple of fakely smiling flight attendants. I don’t complain about anybody’s fake smiles — flight attendants have to keep an eye on at least 100 people in every flight and they don’t give a … about us. They are not greeting us to be nice. They are there to evaluate our state of mind and even health.

Are you calm? OK, go on.

Are you drunk? Are you wasted? In this case this plane is not for you, go back to the airport and sober up.

Are you feeling alright? Oh, you look like you’re really sick, go back to the airport for a medical help.

Do you have disabilities? When you shouldn’t be seated in the emergency or exit row, you won’t be able to help in case of an emergency.

The airplane is a small space with many unfamiliar people, most of whom are anxious or nervous. Some of them are not sober, some are impatient. They are like a big group of kids in kindergarten. All of them can cause a lot of trouble on board. Therefore, all flight attendants want to keep their passengers calm and seated. They are not here to hold your hand if you are scared. They are here to keep an eye on you and evaluate if you are scared enough that you can cause trouble, or if you are anxious like many other passengers. If they think you are the one who can cause trouble, they will probably smile more at you and hold your hand just to avoid any security problems.
