Lillian Lancaster’s Vision Quest to Mount Rushmore

Lillian said pensively at her desk working on her itinerary for her car trip to Mount Rushmore. Even though finals were not long away and she was feeling weaker and was experiencing more frequent bouts with nausea, she was obsessed with getting all the details right and she was struggling about whether she should stop in Phillipsburg to visit the site where she sensed this whole ordeal had begun. She sat there carefully examining a road atlas, her friend and classmate Ryan McLaren knocked on her open door.

“Can I come in and talk to you, Lily?” He asked her.

“I am working on my trip itinerary.”

“You’re still planning this crazy trip to South Dakota?”

“It’s not crazy. It’s something I want to do.”

“Alone,” he told her. “You want to drive to South Dakota alone? Sounds pretty crazy to me.”

“It’s a quest,” she told him earnestly. “Haven’t you ever wanted to go on a quest?”

“Not particularly,” while he answered. “I gave up quests after kindergarten.” He paused. “You realise we live in a very dangerous world. Predators are everywhere.”

“You’re not going to make me afraid. This is something I am going to do.”

“Why now?” He asked her. “What is the sense of urgency?”

He entered the room and could see all of her papers scattered randomly across the desk.

“You are really going overboard with all this.“

“I want it perfect, memorable and enlightening.”

He could see an open box of a video camera sitting on the corner of her desk.

“What is this for?” he asked her.

“I intend to chronicle my trip, any interesting people I meet or places that I go. I want something about people that I can remember.” She spoke these words with a poignant say that Ryan obviously wouldn’t understand.

“It still seems to me you should have someone with you. What if I go along?“

“That’s generous of you. But I want to do this alone, for reasons of my own.“
