The unknown history of the Barometer

How is the air pressure today? Is there any chance of rain? An easy way to know this is to determine the air pressure with the help of a barometer. What is this barometer? A barometer is basically an instrument for determining air pressure. It is very important to know the weather forecast and its use in scientific research. But there is an interesting history behind this discovery that is unknown to many. What is that history? Let’s find out.

The word ‘barometer’ comes from the Greek words ‘baros’ and ‘metron’. The word ‘baros’ means weight and the word ‘metron’ means ‘measure’. In the seventeenth century, many scientists in Italy were working individually on the theory of vacuum and air pressure. Torricelli is one of them. He is considered to be the inventor of the barometer.

Surely you remember Galileo’s famous ‘Tower of Pizza’? He showed that heavy and light objects fall down at the same time without wind obstruction. From here we get some idea about air pressure. Air pressure varies in different parts of the world. The air pressure is highest at sea level. The higher you go, the lower the air pressure. Even the air pressure in a place is never constant, it keeps changing. This is because the earth is constantly revolving around the sun. As a result, different places are receiving different amounts of heat. Torricelli noticed this variation in air pressure. Properly defined air pressure refers to the force applied to each square. From this, it is understood that air also has weight. Torricelli actually worked by converting air pressure into weight.

How did Torresley understand the difference in air pressure? In fact, Galileo introduced this idea. Many ancient philosophers, including Aristotle, taught many centuries ago that it is not possible to have a vacuum or airless space in nature. Scientists have long agreed with this idea. But in the seventeenth century, there was confusion among scientists about this idea. What was the cause of this confusion?
