A Mental Illness Disguised as Alopecia

When society would rather play the blame game and throw out excuses instead of confronting the mental demons within.

The events of the latest televised Academy Awards have caused a clashing of the minds, people second-guessing violent tactics in the name of protecting family, and a certain awareness about alopecia that many have ignored until the infamous slap was heard around the world.

Think back to the skin pigment disease, vitiligo, and how little the world knew about it until Michael Jackson made the disease a household name. Now alopecia has received an uptick in internet searches all because of three people…Chris Rock, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

For those still wondering what the cause of concern is, Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack the hair follicles. The most common forms of the disease are centrally located on the scalp, but the disease can affect the entire body. Guess what causes alopecia areata? Psychological stress and sometimes an underlying illness. That’s it.

Having stated this, let’s declare now that alopecia is not a disability! Stop gaslighting the disease because you cannot collect a check from our government for having it!

Guess what else? People who have Alopecia areata are not bedridden, are not in wheelchairs, and are not on their deathbed because of the disease. So why are we gaslighting alopecia instead of the real issue that caused the Oscars uproar, mental health?

Has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe Jada has been undergoing a lot of stress while creating and moderating the Red Table Talk show? Has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe she has been undergoing a lot of stress because of family issues or health? Will is already bald and it’s apparent he is stressed before being in the hot seat.

Why does any of this matter? It doesn’t.
