The First Remote Viewer

A modern retelling of ancient parapsychological research

Bored and mildly curious, I spent a few minutes to read a bit further into Herodotus’ “History,” and the following passages struck me like a revelation. The author was speaking to me from thousands of years in the past about one of my favorite topics.

He was telling a story about remote viewing.

Ingo Swann is often credited as the author of the term “remote viewing,” and is widely called “the father of remote viewing,” for all of his contributions to the field. He is not, however, the first remote viewer, if we take the definition and look backwards in time for prior art. So what is that definition?

Although “remote viewing" is broadly dismissed by skeptics as “unscientific,” the term has its origin in a scientific research context. Since its invention in the 1970s, the term’s meaning has drifted as a wider public has misapplied it to a variety of experiences and practices.
