An imperfect moment of peace

Finding a sense of rest when things aren’t quite as you wish

Today has been a pretty quiet day.

Which has been something of a relief.

Last week was hectic. I was left wondering whether I’d be reduced to stealing minutes of writing time by dashing off a few sentences in the lift on the way to a meeting. By the end of it all, all I’m in the mood for nothing more strenuous than curling up with a book.

And then there’s the Highly Dangerous Living Room.

Our ceiling has gone to the Dark Side. Some of the cornicing came crashing down, leaving dust and plaster all over the place. We had no desire either to be taken out by collapsing interior decoration or to sit around watching TV wearing hard hats.

Both are outcomes I’m keen to avoid.

So work needs to be done, which takes time. The living room may no longer be Highly Dangerous (we removed another piece of cornicing that was about to come down) but it is ready for the work to begin.

All I want is a sofa and a blanket so I can curl up with a book and shut the world out, but I can’t. The sofa is covered in dust sheets in preparation for the work and there are no other comfy chairs around for me to go to ground in.

It’s a simple ordinary desire, but one that is currently thwarted. But you can’t always get what you want.

So instead I sit here with my eyes closed, simply being. Focusing on my breath, as we’re encouraged to do in yoga. Breathe in, breathe out.

A tiny moment of being in the moment, a tranquil micro-holiday.

An imperfect moment of peace.
