The Sexual History of Femicide Victims is Irrelevant

Grace Millane’s story is all too familiar.

Grace Millane was a young woman who was murdered by her Tinder date. He strangled her to death and hid her body in a suitcase. Although her murderer has been found guilty and will be sentenced to a minimum of ten years without parole, Grace and her family have not received justice. Her sexual preferences and history have been unnecessarily brought into this case in a bid to discredit her. Unfortunately, using a femicide victim’s sexual history to justify the murderer’s actions is nothing new.

If it’s this bad for women who are still alive, imagine how bad it is for women who have been murdered. Unfortunately, Grace Millane’s story is all too familiar. The “rough sex” defense has been used before to suggest that the victim’s murder wasn’t murder at all.
