A Key to being a successful Coach

As member of the board of directors for the Coach Verification Service I meet many coaches, mentors and trainers. In meeting so many of these poeple who have chosen to dedicate their careers to helping others grow is often inspiring. Obviously in meeting so many different coaches it often becomes clear as to why some coaches are so powerful and successful in helping their clients and growing their own businesses, and why some fail in these regards.

While there are several key differences that could highlight (and probably will in future posts)m I wanted to point out one today that is the foundation of all coaching success.

The easiest way to say this (and I hope this becomes a mantra in the coaching industry) is thus: PEOPLE OVER PROGRAMS

THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COACHES FOCUS ON PEOPLE. I can already hear some saying that this should be a pretty common sense foundation to begin with in the coaching industry. But my experience has been that while many coaches may start out with good intentions many coaches shift from people focus to promoting their own agenda, outcomes, programs and perceptions. Obviously not all of these activities are designed from a profit perspective. Instead I have seen that coaches simply get caught up in their patterns and start push their programs rather than engaging people.

Remember you are there to be a coach — not the solution.

A coach is not a “done for you service.” But rather a support, an observer who sees things that the mentee cannot, and a guide. The goal of a coach is not get the mentee to do it the coaches way or to create a carbon copy of the coach. The goal of a coach is to help the mentee become the very best version of themselves.

Most likley you are not guilty of this. But if you are I encourage you to return to people and what your coaching business grow.
