The End of an Era

Tom Brady is one the most accurate and best quarterbacks of his time. He has brought his team time and time again to the playoffs and leads them to the ultimate stage: the Super Bowl, 9 times in the past 20 years. Drafted in the 6th round as 199 picks he delivered on the of the greatest runs to the Superbowl in the past two decades. He has been a driving force for Belichick's offensive power, and he always delivers. And this year's matchup between the 49ers and the Kansas Chiefs is just an indication that the next generation of players is more versatile and agile in this ever-changing game. Patrick Mahomes the complete opposite of Brady, has revolutionized the game by giving the team the option for a QB run or a big play that would eventually lead the chiefs to the Superbowl. Tom Brady is not known for quickness, but for his ability to deliver accurate passes to his team and make big plays that lead them to a win. This year the Patriots lost to the underdog, the Tennessee Titans, 20 to 13. The Titans flamed the offense, as Brady could not lead a comeback which he is known for in a big playoff game like this. Brady played the game only completing 20 of 37 passes without a touchdown, with an interception that ended their Superbowl hopes.

We also see that the 49'ers have been playing Jimmy Garropollo a former Patriot backup quarterback running their offense. Brady has seen generations of players and now they have taken his chance from every making a Superbowl run again. This is the same player who gave the patriots a comeback to an overtime win against Atlanta in Superbowl LI after being down 25 points.

But comebacks are not uncommon now as we saw the Chiefs erase a 24 point deficit against the Houston Texans in the AFC divisional game and win by 20 points Brady who had QBR of 53.7 which is 19th out 20 quarterbacks in the league. He is clearly struggling to keep his offense alive. It was no surprise that Brady was declining, but the fact that the unbeatable Patriots even lost in a wild card round makes the story even more saddening. New England played a season worth watching with trick special teams plays and an unbeatable defense to marvel at, the problem lied in the offense. A declining quarterback with an injury-riddled roster. Tom Brady is not entirely at fault for losing this key wild card game, because of dwindling number wide receivers, there was no one to pass to. We saw Antonio Brown, the superstar, sign with the Patriots only to be cut due to sexual assault allegations, then they traded Josh “flash” Gordon to the Seahawks.

It was surprising to see Brady stumbling and unable to make a throw against the Titans during the game. This year he was only able to make 60.8% of his passes which is almost equivalent to his 2013 season where he completed 60.5% of his passes, Tom Brady has been consistent for the past 20 years, pulling off 6 Superbowl wins is nothing to scoff at, but this clear difference between him and other player: his age. Tom Brady is 42 years old, he is way past his prime and the numbers show. The magic he has is just gone, and whether the trade him this season to possibly rebuild. One thing is for sure the Brady Dynasty is over.
