My view on Social Media and Intercultural Topics

To what extent is there a connection between social media and intercultural issues and What role have social media platforms played in the current age of globalization? It is a fact that, due to globalization, the Internet is one of the most important communication channels in the world. Statistics show that by 2017 more than a third of the world’s population will be registered on a social media platform (see Statista, 2018). It’s not just us, for example, who share impressions and moments from our lives with friends on Instagram, but also politicians, celebrities and even companies who make statements about certain events or just want to clarify their point of view. The Internet makes it possible to know from anywhere in the world what is going on on the other side of the planet. An example for clarification: Donald Trump, as the “most powerful man in the world”, as President of the United States of America, posts his point of view on foreign policy. Everyone with access to the Internet can follow this live and comment on it directly afterwards and discuss it with other followers. One can imagine that many different opinions from many different countries meet with different cultures.

The access to the Internet, and thus the access to social media platforms, makes it possible for people from all cultures of the world to communicate with each other — be it on political topics or just the exchange with friends you have met while travelling.

To answer the question of whether and to what extent there is a connection between social media and intercultural issues: From my point of view, I would definetely say YES, social media today is THE channel that connects cultures through communication.
