The Ultimate Blog Guide for EID100

Welcome future EID100 students! Today I will discuss the ‘How To’s’ on how to write a blog that receives extra marks… Yes, you read right- I said EXTRA marks! Now a few points to discuss first before I provide my handy dandy tips. Now, within this course you will be tasked of writing a total of 10 modules that are worth 2.5 marks each. If you have done the math correctly, you will arrive at a 25% total on your overall grade. For some, this may seem like a piece of cake, and for others you may be dreading the sight of the word “writing”. If I halted your interest there, I may just provide you with a piece of information worth reading. These modules do not have to be in the forms of essays or formal writing. Now, how is that for a change? So, for you individuals bearing the headache at the sole thought of writing, take some Advil and get your creative, and or informal juices flowing. This is a prime opportunity for you future EID100 students to gain extra marks, which can be used to boost your overall grade. I have never met anyone who doesn’t like bonus marks. I hope I have gotten all of your attention now! My biggest advice is put forth your effort once a week, it is not a time-consuming task if you do not wish for it to be, incorporate a unique spin on your posts, and have fun with it!

Medium.com is a user-friendly blogging site ideal for any type of blogger. This interactive publishing platform is simple and straightforward to navigate, perfect for novice or experienced bloggers. Once you have accomplished finding your blogging site for your modules, you are then ready to dive into the next steps!

You will be given an array of module options to select from for each module number. For instance Module 2: Access, may have 6 topics to choose from. Read each module’s instructions carefully and choose which one best meets your interests. Every time I choose my topic, I ensure it fascinates me, and it is something I will have a sufficient amount of information to write about. Once I have mastered the selection step, I then dive into the research part. The internet is here to provide us an abundance of information, let’s use it! This is where I begin researching the topic on different websites, and seek relevant and useful quotes pertaining to my chosen module.

Once you have gathered your research on your given module topic, you are now ready to start typing your blog! Before I let you off that easy… here are a few things to keep in mind when writing your blog. This is the opportunity for you to speak your mind, express your thoughts, be creative, and show your flair. If you do not wish to create a formal essay approach to a blog- then don’t! No one is going to come knocking on your door and kick you out of university for creating a blog that is not in formal language…well, definitely not for you EID100 students! There is no need to have the frightened look on your faces if you are wanting to sound conversational, make jokes (appropriate ones of course) or add any uniqueness to your pieces of writing. It is YOU behind the screen after all, there is no harm in letting your own creativity shine through the screen.

On a serious note, it is important to ensure your writing is clear, concise, and proper. Whenever we write something, it is key to check over grammar and look for any spelling errors. Once I complete a writing task, I review the draft several times before I submit the final product. This review and edit step is key in order to ensure your writing piece is ready to be presented to a professor… meaning as minimal errors as possible! At times, we may use purposeful spelling errors to make a point- this can be appropriate in certain situations. It is important to have common sense and be our own judge to the pieces of writing we submit and publish. Once you have reviewed your piece more than once, then imagine your grandma is reading your post. This is always a prime determining factor if your writing is appropriate to post online and to submit to your teacher, or not. Essentially, do not write in a way that you would not wish for your grandmother to see.

Voila, once you have completed the grammar and grandma check… you are ready to press the golden button: PUBLISH! Wow, what a relief! Now you can pat yourself on the back for all of the hard work you have done, and would you look at that- It didn’t even take up too much of your time. You can still watch another episode of How I Met Your Mother!

Wait! Don’t leave just yet. Here are some blogging tips that will help you be well on your way to receiving those 100% or 100% + module grades.

I hope this helps you future EID100 students in creating the ultimate best blog! I think taking a few of these tips can help you be a blogging pro!

All the best,

Kyra Wex: A fellow EID100 student
