Netflix for paywalled articles

random brainfart idea -

there should be a netflix/spotify for paywalled articles agnostic of media outlet, eg. medium/economist/FT etc.

All these media outlets have their own paywall, and its reasonable and fair that journalists and these publications need to make money, better still that this money doesn’t come from a bias source such as advertising.

However, for most laymen paying for a subscription on a monthly basis for a publication where you might only read one or two articles a month seems excessive, especially when you’re reading from multiple sources.

It would be cool to see a business that allows you to subscribe to 1 platform on a monthly basis then allows those customers to use their ‘credits’ from that subscription to access specific articles from these paywalled media outlets on a per-article basis… since its agnostic to the outlet, like spotify or netflix, i would pay for a subscription because my usage would be far higher than if it only subscribed to an individual outlet.

Business-wise, the per-article fee would be higher (in the form of credits) but the frequency per media outlet would be lower and this would represent the benefit to the consumer. i might pay more per article, but i gain because i can read from different sources that change from period to period, instead of paying more in absolute term for a subscription to each of multiple outlets.

i can see that there are some issues with this business, such at — you don’t own the content so you’re at a disadvantage, one that netflix is starting to see; you also would struggle to find a fair and transferable value per article, and the revenue split on that would also be something that would be hard to negotiate on a per-media outlet basis.

These barriers aside, since theres precedence that has been show with films, music — it seems unusual that the same hasn’t been replicated for written content.
