Calling All Chicago Cubs Baseball Fans

A new community for Cubs fans.

Welcome to all Chicago Cubs fans — or anyone interested in Chicago Cubs baseball!

I consider myself a lifelong Chicago Cub fan. However, my story about how I became a Cub fan is a little bit out of the ordinary.

So let’s start there.

I grew up in North Mississippi, and my Dad was (and still is) a St. Louis Cardinal fan. He grew up in the Mississippi Delta in the ’60s and ’70s, listening to the Cardinals on the radio. Since he could listen to all their games, he became a St. Louis Cardinal fan.

So how did I become a Chicago Cubs fan?

I’m a child of the ’90s, and I started watching baseball with my Dad during the home run race of 1998. He watched the Cardinals, of course, so I saw a lot of Mark McGwire.

And I didn’t like him — at all.

I remember watching him argue with an umpire once, which set me against him and the Cardinals. Not a great reason, really, but it is what it is.

The other guy in the home run race was a guy named Sammy Sosa. And I liked him. I liked his batting stance and imitated him often in our baseball games with the neighborhood kids in the backyard. I would even do his signature “home run hop” after hitting a home run over the chain-link fence.

Also, the Cubs just so happened to come on TV a lot in North Mississippi, thanks to their deal with WGN.

And so — I became a Chicago Cubs fan.

I’ve always been a bit of a baseball nerd.

I collected baseball cards and still have them stored in my garage. I used to get the Bill James books for Christmas and would read them repeatedly. I even used to “create” my own player’s career by using stat lines off of baseball cards to create a player’s career.

But as I ‘“grew up” and went to college and started working, my passion for baseball faded somewhat. I still watched the games and kept up with players — but I didn’t care about the game like I did when I was younger.

And I’m ready to change that.

I love the game of baseball, and I want to share that love for the game with other passionate baseball fans.

Money isn’t the only reason I’m starting The Cub Life, but I hope to earn some money from it.

It would be cool to eventually go to some Cubs games using money from the paid subscriptions on Substack.

I plan to give a lot of value to this community, so earning some money from those efforts would be great.

There are some excellent newsletters on Substack for various MLB teams.

Several writers are active in covering some of the MLB teams — but very little (if anything) is being written about the Chicago Cubs.

So, as a Cubs fan, I decided to step in and fill a need on Substack.

The topics will include:

There are a lot of potential topics to cover, and as the community grows, I’ll be listening to what yall (my Southern is coming through) want to hear.

I plan to post twice a week during the offseason — on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Once the season begins, posts will happen much more frequently — as often as games are played. So, sometimes you may receive a post every day of the week.

I’m still working through all the benefits of the paid subscription. I plan to eventually start putting one post a week (in addition to the posts on Tuesdays and Thursdays) behind the paid subscription paywall.

I also have everything I would need to start a weekly podcast — and that may be something I do for paying subscribers as well.

As the community grows, we may be able to have interviews with people involved with the Cubs — players, past players, staff, front office, etc. These could also be made available to paying subscribers.

But not everything will be put behind a paywall. Free subscribers will have access to plenty of content as well.

So what can you do?
