5 Common Concerns about Alternative Options

Because people do care…just like this puppy!

You’re doing what?!

The acquaintance who is trying her fifth fad diet in a year. Another article making the rounds about how “insert natural, organic or other buzzword here” is going to turn your life around. The horror story about the family who would simply not get professional help — with drastic results.

Alternative medicine supporters can come off as a little crazy. A lot more people died when people relied on these methods! Conventional medical is generally available in America at the local CVS or Walgreens. It works quickly and with no fuss.

Professionals exist for a reason, after all. Why do people try to go back to the Dark Ages?

At the core of the mass of objections and arguments are five major and valid questions.

1. Why do you bother?

2. Is it safe?

3. Is it tested?

4. Why are the results so different?

5. Does it work?

The simplest answer to this question and the concern behind it can be boiled down to one statement.

Modern medicine does not hold all the answers to the human race’s needs.

Granted, it holds many more answers than humans have ever had before. The developments in the medical world are astounding. This is not an argument (though it has been used as one) to ignore or detract from the very real cures and prevention that modern medicine, trained doctors and wellness checkups provide.

And yet it cannot provide an answer to some people. No one can know or anticipate all the ways that a human body can and will react. What typically works for most people may not work for one. You may be left looking for answers all the same, even with thousands of dollars spent and multiple professionals later.

Alternative medicine may and sometimes can hold the answers. Why should you limit yourself to conventional medicine when you can’t find answers there?

Very well, one may say, I understand the need for answers and solutions when you can’t find them at your doctor’s office or it seems like you are not receiving the help that you need.

But is it safe?

By “safety” many people are concerned with the lack of study and testing that faddy trends and gimmicky solutions are known for. Horror stories again are the quickest to spring to mind, whether they are actually valid or not.

With proper prudence, it can be said that alternative medicine is generally safer than expected.

The short answer is not half as much as many people would like.

The majority of established alternative options that are readily available do have a certain amount of research and testing behind them.

The answer is still “not much.”

In its defense, the field of alternative medicine has and is being researched and explored more and more. (Several organizations) exist to bring clarity and proven results to you.

For the geeks and nerds, historical documents exist that detail the effects of certain natural cures, plants and more from far before conventional medicine became mainstream. Do these count as tests? It’s really a personal decision.

Again, please use common sense and research before embarking willy-nilly!

Because people and situations are so different.

Sorry! That may be a little sarcastic.

Modern medicine has done a wonderful job on many “standard” issues and diseases. Take measles, for example. Because of the nature of measles, doctors were able to develop a vaccine and apply it to the majority of people. No more measles!

This does not hold true for many “shadow” or mystery situations. The people in those are generally facing very unique scenarios that do not hold true for many people. Typically, there are not enough people to test and observe possible solutions according to standard medical requirements.

Small consolation to people who are hurting!

So, the older methods of trying different things out and sticking to what works still apply. And yes, sometimes the results work and sometimes they do not. It’s still a bit of an art.

The question at the root of it all: Will alternative medicine work for me?

The only answer that can be given without knowing the situation, challenges and what someone is already doing is “maybe.”

What can be said is that healthy eating, exercise, lower stress levels, and internal peace do help one’s wellness and health. And that is what all medicine aims to do.
